FAI Cup winners Drogheda United have distanced themselves from Conor McGregor after the MMA fighter shared photographs of the trophy on social media.

McGregor, 36, posted the images on Instagram as he celebrated with his cousin Warren Davis, who was an unused substitute in November’s final.

The caption on McGregor’s Instagram post read: “How much is it to buy a league of Ireland team? I might buy two.”

Drogheda stunned Derry City 2-0 in Dublin to lift the FAI Cup for the second time in the club’s history.

In a statement, the League of Ireland Premier Division club said a social media post “has been brought to our attention regarding the FAI Cup”.

“Those pictured are a close relation to one of our first team players, who like all the other players had custody of the cup to celebrate with their families at different intervals,” the club added.

“Drogheda United do not associate ourselves with the individual who made the social media post in any way, or with any unauthorised brands mentioned.”

In November, an Irish jury found McGregor liable for assault in a civil rape case.

The Irishman was ordered to pay 248,000 euros (£206,000) in damages.

McGregor, who had denied the allegations, said he will appeal against the verdict
